Walhalla Goldfields Railway, located at 2 Main Road, celebrates the gold mining history of Walhalla. Gold was first discovered in the area in 1862 and large amounts of the mineral were mined in Walhalla for the next 50 years. Transporting gold as well as supplies in and out of Walhalla was difficult and, in 1900, the government awarded the town a rail connection. The railway was completed in 1910. Only a year later, the Long Tunnel Extended Mine closed with another closing in 1914. There were no other local industries, and the town began to fade away. It was still a location for tourists and specialty trains ran to the area until 1941. Eventually, the railroad ceased operation completely until 1991 and began operating again in 1994. The train takes you on a 60-minute round trip, leaving Walhalla Station and traveling to Thomson before returning.

Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine is open for tours daily, allowing you to see firsthand what it was like to be a gold miner in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The mine dates back to 1863 when Ned Stringer led a group of prospectors to the area. Following the Thomson River downstream, the prospectors found gold, leading to a rush of other prospectors in the area. Opened by Hercules Mining Company, Long Tunnel Extended Adit traveled about 525 feet (160m) and 394 feet (120m) below the surface. Tours take you into the underground machinery chamber as a guide discusses old mining methods.

You can also learn about some of the postmasters who served the town, like Frances Seymour who had to leave her post when she married Henry Sabine as married women were not permitted to hold hat positions. The same happened to Eileen Meehan in 1927 when she married Ossie Clemann, a post office. In 1948, Dorreen Hannan purchased the building and served as postmaster since 1928. She moved into the residence and served until 1963 when the post office transferred to the general store, although she remained in the residence until 1988.
